jaja’s african hairbraiding by vinson cunningham

I got the chance to make an illustration accompany a a review of a fun new play “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding” and it was a blast.

On this one, I fully leaned into my memories of getting my own hair braided on Franklin Ave. in Brooklyn, NY.

The smell of sheen and Sulfur 8 in the air, Nollywood films playing in the background, and pretending not to listen to auntie’s gossip about going’s on were my inspiration for this one, in addition to clips and images of the play. Together, my AD and were able to make an illustration that made nods to the set and to Jaja’s daughter, Marie.
