MLK DAY

I was approached by Google to take on the man, the myth, the image - Martin Luther King Jr. - for that year’s MLK Day google doodle.

MLK had already been depicted in a number of different ways by some of my peers, so we wanted to try a new approach. My only guidelines to the open ended brief were that I depict MLK in an inventive way, and to include the letters

g, o , o , g, l and e.

I was focused on the people around MLK, the environments he found himself in - the buses during the boycotts, at home with his wife and kids, his contemporaries, in church etc. I was interested in the idea of thinking about why or how MLK came to be the respected figure he is rather than a representation of that figure-dom.
